New Tools & Technologies
Here are some exciting new products/services announcements from SNCR members and other new communications technology and services providers:
You may have noticed we have a new feature on our left sidebar - headlines from SNCR News & Views, powered by Vendor Council member Personal Bee. Check it out and maybe start your own Bee.
Performancing has announced Performancing Partners, a new blog advertising network. Bloggers can easily add their blogs, and get ranked in the marketplace alongside similar blogs in order to help match advertisers to appropriate blogs.
SNCR Research Fellow David Parmet announced his involvement in a new start up, Confabb, the world’s largest database of conferences and trade shows. But it’s a lot more than that, according to Parmet. ???On top of the search, we???ve layered a full- featured portal with user generated ratings/reviews of speakers, sessions and the conference itself, flickr photos and blog mentions of conferences, discussion boards, tracking by RSS and calendaring.
Business Wire has announced many new upgrades to its Business Wire Connect offering. Here???s a video presentation and a PDF document explaining the new features.
Six Apart recently launched Vox, a new personal blogging service. According to Six Apart, Vox has rich privacy features and plays well with the other web services you already use, like Photobucket, iStockphoto, Youtube and Flickr.
Zimbio is a content sharing network that helps people form communities about specific topics of interest. It???s a great way for groups of people to research a topic together or for someone to stay up to speed on news and opinions. Each “portal” on zimbio is a media-centric wiki that acts as a web guide to a specific topic - with photo albums, headline feeds, links to articles and news, a group blog and forum, and video playlists. For a cool example, check out the Society for New Communications Research portal. Anyone can create, add to or edit Zimbio public portals. Zimbio caters to the blogging community in a couple of ways. You can promote your personal blog by linking it to your account and dual posting a few articles. Each post introduces your blog to new readers by including links back to your site and you???ll also have the chance to be featured across the network. You can also add Zimbio content to your blog by using widgets. Do a search for a topic on Zimbio and then click on the “Create a widget” link to see an example. Or you can add a widget with recent articles from SNCR bloggers here:

On New Communications Law
By Maurene Caplan-Grey, Grey Consulting & SNCR Research Fellow & Advisory Board Member
Yellowikis was started in 2004 by father and daughter team, Paul Youlten and 14-year old Rosa Blaus. Yellowikis is an online, participatory directory, which uses free wiki software MediaWiki as its technology framework. The site is run as a hobby and not for profit, said Mr. Youlten. “We have 400 to 500 registered editors who update the pages as a hobby.”
Commercial-based, online directory provider Yell.com is threatening legal action against Yellowikis — claiming Intellectual Property (IP) infringement.
Yell’s lawyers say that the similarities in name may cause users to go to yellowikis.org instead of yell.com. Yell is demanding that Youlten shut down yellowikis.org and relinquish yellowikis’ domains. Though not stated by Yell’s lawyers, the 5,000 plus and growing number of entries in yellowiki.org challenges yell.com’s own directory information.
The case has not yet been argued in the courts. Regardless of the outcome, the Yell v. Yellowikis case raises several questions.

Welcome to New Communications Review, formerly New Communications Blogzine. It’s a new year, a new name and a new formal affiliation!
We are very pleased to announce that New Communications Review is now the official blog of the Society for New Communications Research, a non-profit, global think tank dedicated to the advanced study of new communications tools, technologies and emerging modes of communication, i.e. blogs, wikis, RSS, podcasts, collaborative tools and the growing phenomena of participatory communications and their effect on traditional media, marketing, public relations and advertising, as well as their broader impact on business, politics, entertainment, culture, education, religion and society.
New Communications Review will continue to feature commentary from SNCR research fellows and other industry experts, as well as updates on the Society’s latest research initiatives. We will also continue to bring you the latest news, industry research and market updates, new products and services announcements, case studies and whitepapers and our podcast directory, as well as industry awards opportunities and upcoming events.
This issue features contributions from several of our fellows, including the Society’s Research Chair Elizabeth Albrycht who offers ten tips for social bookmarking, tagging and folksonomies; commentaries from Giovanni Rodriguez and Neville Hobson; some thoughts on the evolution of the new media from Tom Foremski and a suggestion about a “new focus” for PR from Phil Gomes.
We are also extremely delighted to feature an excerpt from the much anticipated book from Shel Israel and Robert Scoble, Naked Conversations.
In addition, Toby Ward offers valuable tips on how to select a wiki and Maurene Caplan Grey explores the implications of Symantec’s acquisition of IMLogic and a new federal law that makes “e-annoyances” illegal.

Welcome to the last issue of New Communications Blogzine for 2005 — the final issue in our first year of publication! We thank you for your interest, participation and support over the past year, and hope you will continue to read, question, comment and contribute.
The past year has been fantastically interesting to watch! The blogosphere grew by nearly 300%. In the beginning 2005, Technorati was tracking eight million blogs. Now that number has risen to more than 23 million, and some entities reported several months ago that there were more than 60 million blogs. David Sifry reports that a new blog is created about every second, there are more than 80,000 created daily. Traditional media outlets, corporations, membership associations and nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, sports franchises, religious organizations and individuals alike are immersing themselves in this world of participatory communications in new and exciting ways. In a study conducted by Hostway earlier this year, 30% of respondents indicated that they read blogs, and 52% said bloggers should have the same rights as traditional journalists.
New blogging software, RSS providers, blog advertiser networks, podcasters, videocasters and new media measurement companies have sprung up. Investment dollars have begun to flow and major acquisitions have occured. It’s been a whirlwind of activity in this ever-evolving and surprising space.
It has been wonderful to be able to witness, document, explore and research these developments both through this publication and the New Communications Forum, as well as the recently formed Society for New Communications Research. The past year was very busy and fulfilling indeed, and 2006 promises to be equally as exhilarating!
In this issue we take a look at what lies ahead, as we bring you the final chapter from Jeremy Wright’s book Blog Marketing, “The Future of Business Blogging.” Elizabeth Albrycht presents us with her perspective on “The State of the Future,” a new report from the Millennium Project. John Cass explores a new concept – “synthetic transparency” as it applies to blogging ethics. And we feature two new contributors: Journalist Tom Abate examines the present and future state of journalism, and Susan Getgood discusses the “role of the blogroll,” and Jeremy Pepper shares an anecdote about how blogging can lead to an article in the mainstream press.
In addition, we are pleased to feature a very comprehensive review of a variety of professional blogging software options by Performancing editor Chris Garrett, as well as a review of a very cool new mobile advertising tagging service, qtags, by Matt Galloway.
We also bring you the latest news, research and market updates, new products and services, the latest case studies and whitepapers and our podcast directory, as well as jobs and awards opportunities and upcoming events. I also share my predictions for the coming year.
We hope you enjoy this issue and find it informative and interesting. We encourage you to participate in the discussion by commenting on any of the articles. If you are interested in writing for or advertising in this publication, please email me at jenm@newcommforum.com or call (650) 331-0083.
If you like New Communications Blogzine, we request that you add us to your blogroll and/or syndicate this site, and we hope you will share it with your colleagues and friends. If you are not already a regular subscriber, we invite you sign up now to receive our bi-monthly enewsletter.
And remember, New Communications Forum 2006 will take place March 1-3 in Palo Alto, CA. Register by December 31st to take advantage of Early Bird savings! We have just posted the full conference program at www.NewCommForum.com. Please check it out. I think you’ll agree that this event is not to be missed!
Once again, thank you for your time and participation. I wish you a very happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous new year!
Happy Holidays!

Welcome to the latest issue of New Communications Blogzine.
In this edition we focus on the fascinating evolution of participatory communications in a mobile world. Dan Taylor, managing director of the Mobile Enterprise Alliance addresses this topic with a commentary on participatory workplace communications on mobile devices. Elizabeth Fletcher offers an examination of the impending cell phone directory and accompanying email hoax, and we provide you with some new mobile marketing case studies and the latest news on the mobile industry.
In addition Phil Gomes, Edelman’s new senior counsel, online communications offers his thoughts on this topic in our first podcast, New Communications Conversations, which we are very excited to launch in this issue. I interviewed Phil about his new role at Edelman and how the public relations industry can best interact with and participate in the blogosphere.
Elizabeth Dolcourt addresses this issue from another angle, asking the question “Should PR agencies blog?” and proposing a new tool — the “blogonomic index.”
We are also pleased to bring you a Podcast Primer from Ragan Communications, a feature on blogging as a tool for network building from Elizabeth Albrycht, and musings on the changing media industry from Tom Foremski.
You may have noticed a significant change to our industry news and research sections: 14 Days, New Tools & Technologies and TidBits. We have expanded our news coverage with the latest headlines and news briefs from the most prominent news sources around the world and the most salient posts from all around the blogosphere — all in order to provide you with more comprehensive daily coverage of the world of new communications.

Welcome to the latest issue of New Communications Blogzine.
Inspired by the PRSA’s declaration of September as Ethics Month and Elizabeth Albrycht’s exploration of this topic in our last issue, this issue focuses on the topic of ethics in professional communications and the impact of new communications tools and practices on ethical considerations.
Elizabeth Fletcher explores the newly proposed code of ethics as prepared by Shona Seifert, the Ogilvy & Mather executive convicted of fraud. (Interestingly, we found her “new code” to be strangely similar to that of the Advertising Federation of Australia).
Matt Galloway discusses WOMM (word of mouth marketing) ethics and the new code developed by WOMMA (the Word of Mouth Marketing Association). Kathy Klotz-Guest provides a commentary on “Marketing Ethics in Times of Disaster.” And, we provide you with links to resources addressing codes of ethics for bloggers and online journalists. We also ask for your comments and opinions on the practice of paid bloggers.
In addition we are very pleased to welcome Simon Jackson, who has provided us with a review of Traction. And, as always, we bring you the latest news, product announcements and research; several new additions to our Case Study & Whitepaper repository and our Podcast Directory, as well as our Events Directory.
We’d like to draw special attention to the upcoming Global PR Blog Week, which will take place September 19-23. Several of NewComm Blogzine’s contributors will be participating, so be sure to check it out.
Also, check out our newest addition, the NewComm Blogzine Job Board.
